The Smith's Dodgers were founded in 1984 by a group of people meeting
at Les Smith's house in Vermillion. This group of people met occasionally
to discuss matters of great importance. And drink coffee.
Many of the USD coaches and supporters, and Vermillion High School faculty
met at the small house on South Pine Street.
The members threw in 25 cents into a kitty to cover the cost of coffee,
but Les, always the gracious host, would not use the money for coffee.
The pot of money soon grew. What to do with the money?
One discussion thread lead to the creation of the Smith's Dodgers. These
people were looking for a summer activity. Les loved baseball
and others agreed that a softball team would be great fun. Soon
the Dodger's were ready to take the field!
The name Smith's Dodgers was the choice of name, but some others were
mentioned. Ken's Cubs was one of them. The overwhelming choice
was the Dodgers, a combo of Les's name and Ken's favorite team.
Currently the Dodger's are sponsored by Carey's of Vermillion, a gathering
place for after the game to discuss the game, celebrate wins (sometimes
many) enjoy the company of the team and by The Graphic Edge, Breda Iowa.
Many different people have played
for the Dodgers. Some are still playing! If we missed someone
let us know. We are trying to keep this as up to date as possible.
