Syllabus

Course Credit: 3 Credit Hours

Prerequisites:
None

Course Description: Basketball 101 will provide students with a basic understanding of the fundamentals of coaching basketball. Topics include developing a coaching style and philosophy, drills, offenses and defenses and general coaching tasks. This class will cover a wide range of age groups, from grade school to college.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the learner will:

  1. Identify proper coaching techniques.
  2. Implement a coaching philosophy.
  3. Develop a sound practice strategy, plan and design.
  4. Manage and coordinate team schedule, equipment and items related to team.
  5. Demonstrate a knowledge of basketball basics in offense and defense.

Course Requirements: The student is expected to view all the course material on the CD; read and take the self tests at the end of each topic; write their coaching philosophy; Develop a daily practice plan; create a scouting report of a game or an opponent; design and submit one offensive play and 1 out of bounds play.

Assignments & Grading: (200 TOTAL POINTS)

Exams: Pass the self exams at end of each chapter. 150 points

Basketball Practice Plan: Develop a one day practice plan for a two hour practice. 10 points

Scouting Report: Scout a game, pick one team and that is your opponent for the next game. Follow the lesson to develop your scouting plan. Use form from the web. 10 points

Coaching philosophy paper: 2 pages on your thoughts on coaching. 10 points.

Play Design: Design one offensive play verses man and one OB play. 20 points.

Grade Scale: (A=100-90) (B = 89-80) (C = 79-70) (D=69-60) %

To Successfully Complete the Course:

Earn at least a 65% on the exams
Submit plays
Complete other assignments
