Shooting Fundamentals

There are different shots taken in basketball and each has their own personality. The jump shot, free throw are similar in technique, the layup and hook shot require a different technique.

If you can shoot, there probably a place on the floor for that player.

Let's look at the basic jump shot.

Technique: Catch the ball. Hold the ball in both hands with your shoulders square to the basket in good basketball position. Your shooting hand is under the ball and your off hand is a guide to keep the ball in your shooting hand. Good shooters do not even need to use the guide hand. Bring the ball up to shoot and jump in the air, release the ball at the top of the jump and follow through.

Proper technique includes all the basics of proper basketball position: balance, under control and good form.

Practice the jump shot from different areas on the court, using both right and left side of the floor. Use these 3 quick drills: from a stationary position, after a dribble or two and after receiving a pass.

Jump Shooting Tips of the Trade:

1. When you start your workout, start with shots in close, get a feel for the ball and work your way to your spots.
2. Practice shots you will take in a game.
3. Simulate game conditions. When warmed up, shoot your shots quickly, use fakes, spin the ball to yourself and shoot and use a chair as a screener and shoot.
4. Shooting well takes repetition, so keep practicing!
5. Practice "horse" trick shots some other time.
6. Follow through with a high finish and the wrist reaching down to the floor.
7. Pass the ball to an open teammate
8. Work with a partner, have them pass the ball for you.
9. Practice stationary or spot shots, then use one or two dribbles and shoot.
10. Always square up to the basket when shooting.
